Steal Ashlee Simpson’s Self-Care Routine
Ashlee Simpson has a lot going on: recording music with her husband, Evan Ross, parenting their daughter Jagger, 3, and her son Bronx, 10, whom she shares with ex-husband Pete Wentz, and touring the country as part of Ashlee + Evan. She’s also a very doting auntie to sister Jessica Simpson’s adorable little brood, including new baby Birdie. Simpson is the first to admit that things in her world can get “a little hectic.” But the singer is also pretty good at finding ways to squeeze in time for herself in the name of restoring her energy and giving her mind and body a little TLC.
My favorite form of self care is getting up and working out. For me it’s always about my kids but once I’ve dropped them off, I usually go to hot yoga or to a Tracy Anderson class. I like to work out in the heat because it feels so good to detoxify. It’s not easy at first and can make your workout a little harder but now I love it!
Hot yoga is also incredible for clearing my head. I feel like I can really ground myself in that. Yoga is a beautiful place where I find my center and actually, no matter what workout I do, it really helps to reduce my stress. I listen to my body each day because sometimes I’m not feeling the full routine. I’ll hop on the treadmill for a second or it could be 20 minutes. It really doesn’t matter, as long as I’m doing something. But I find as I’m getting older, it’s just nice to do something a little active. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy. (Evan playfully interjects, “You’re not getting old babe!” Ashlee giggles.) OK, I’m not old. I am 34 but I still like to do something physical just in general. It sets my tone and my day.
So whether it’s yoga or Tracy Anderson or something else, those are the fight off stress moments that I need in my routine. And after hot yoga, I go home and I’m usually the color of a tomato. It takes me a long time to return to normal color so typically while I’m going to pick up my daughter Jagger, I’m still a tomato (laughs). But I love those moments where I can take a second for myself before I go pick up the kids from school.
A little time in front of the mirror
A serene bath
I love an Epsom salt bath. (Evan confirms: “She looooves her baths!”) I do! And then also not so much with the Epsom salt, but I love baths with my daughter. We still do those and those are really great. And I like to play some music to relax to while in the tub. I had played Sade while in labor with Jagger, and so we still take baths to Sade. It’s something mellow to relax us. I light candles and she’s like, “Ooh! I want a mommy bath.” She knows a mommy bath is a Zen bath. Although, she loves to splash around and makes milkshakes of soapy water. It’s all great.
A clean reset
Once a year I do a cleanse early in the year, like in January. Last year I did The Clean Program Cleanse. This year I just finished the Purium Cleanse and that was a 10-day cleanse. It was like three green shakes a day and they had fiber at night. It was like all avocado and apple. I like to do it because it challenges my body and it triggers me to get focused. So I do it once a year but only once a year (laughs). I do not cleanse all the time! Once a year!
We have two kids so keeping things organized around the house can be a challenge (Evan interjects: “It’s so hard!”) but there is something so nice about your space being clean. And I love when it smells nice in our home. I’ll spritz some Febreze around to freshen up the space. And I’m usually singing while I’m cleaning—always actually!
Before lights out
For me, at the end of the night, my favorite way to unwind is snuggles with my kids. That is what I relax to. I look forward to that all day!
